Top 5 Funny Moments of 2012

By Ross Zelen on December 31, 2012

For all of the dreck and the darkness that ravaged 2012, some pretty hilarious stuff went down this year. In the sports world, America laughed with Bryce Harper’s “Clown Question” comments and reveled in Olympic whoopsies. Political debates seemed to be the place to be if you were looking for the next “Yo Mama” jokes, or at least wondering how to uses cheeky language to insult your out-of-touch friends.

Here is just a reminder that in any field, on any day, hilarious things can happen that can bring smiles (be it awkward or inappropriate) to people’s faces. In my opinion, here are the Top 5 funny

Number 5) Mark Sanchez’s Butt Fumble:

The New York Jets were awful this season, being more of a circus than a professional football team. Fans were turned off from supporting the team, and not just cause on Thanksgiving night, the starting quarterback decided to go face first into one of his offensive lineman’s butts.
The perfect summation of the Jets’ 35-0 loss to the New England Patriots was Sanchez fumbling after he ran directly into the rear end of guard Brandon Moore and fumbled, leading to a Pats touchdown. More importantly, it led to new jerseys that more adequately described Sanchez’s terrible play all season.

Number 4) Mitt Romney Gives Big Bird The Ax

In the first debate, Willard Mitt Romney dominated the conversation and captivated audiences much more than the tired-looking President Obama. Romney made up serious ground in the first debate, but most of his success in the polls were overshadowed by one small remark that triggered a national resurgence in Seasame Street.

Romney’s trangression: “I like PBS. I love Big Bird. I actually like you, too [Jim Lehrer]. But I’m not gonna keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for it.”

Ardent supporters of the popular Sesame Street character (and public broadcasting) took to Twitter to create parody accounts such as @SadBigBird and @FiredBigBird the latter of whom quipped before the account was suspended: “Mitt Romney favors Wall Street over Sesame Street.”

By morning, the remark created a corresponding meme – the mark of a truly funny moment.

One image depicted Big Bird seated on the front stoop, next to two children, holding a sign declaring, “Will work for food.” Another close-up of the feathered Muppet appeared against the caption: “Big bird is sad. We’re all sad.”

It is safe to say that this comment is one that will stick with Romney’s name for the rest of his days.

Number 3) The Rise of Key & Peele

Key & Peele is another one of that small group of very personal, very present sketch shows. It’s one of the first sketch shows that prove we are moving toward a post-racial society or, at least, there’s hope the old racial lines can be blurred by shared pop culture.

The show on Comedy Central is unbelievably hilarious. Like pee your pants hilarious. The skits concerning President Obama (especially his youth) are priceless and gave great levity during stressful and dreary times this year.

My favorite skit was the East/West College Football Bowl Game Introductions, making light of the sometimes silly names of college athletes. Check it out here on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gODZzSOelss

Number 2) President Obama’s “Horses and Bayonets” Burn on Mitt

In the foreign policy debate, President Barack Obama won in convincing fashion after he really let himself use his quick wit to overpower Mitt Romney. At one point, Obama might have even gotten himself in trouble when he mocked Mitt Romney for saying that the Navy needed more ships.Who cares though, because that turned into one of the best lines in the century.

President Obama’s response to Mitt’s statement: You mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our military’s changed. We have these things called aircraft carriers, where planes land on them. We have these ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines.

And so the question is not a game of Battleship, where we’re counting slips. It’s what our capabilities are.

Game, Set, Match President. Welcome to your second term, sassy.

Number 1 Funny Moment of The Year) Stephan Feck’s London Flop

Stephan Feck probably didn’t plan on finishing last in the men’s 3-meter springboard diving preliminaries, but he most certainly did not plan on his dive becoming an Internet viral sensation, earning the title of “Worst Olympic Dive.”

It was terrible, but we could not look away. His last name made it better, or is that worse. I still don’t know, but as one sports columnist put it: ”But hey, in the end, the dude still made the Olympics. He probably doesn’t give a Feck …”
