College is pretty expensive as it is. There is tuition to pay for, books to buy, rent to pay, and a belly to fill. When you spend all your time doing schoolwork and then the rest of that time working to pay to go to school, there is not usually very much money left to go around. It can be hard to find room in your budget for items that are not absolutely essential (and even then, you might still be hard-pressed to make your dollar stretch as far as you need it to).

College is also notorious for kind of crappy apartments. I mean, sometimes you really get what you pay for, and a lot of students can’t afford very much. And furniture is surprisingly expensive. A furnished apartment is often way out of the price range of a college student, which means that they have to slap together an apartment’s worth of furniture on their own, as well as on a budget. These pieces come from hand me downs, thrift stores, garage sales, and more.

Sometimes this is fine. Sometimes it just has to be fine. But other times, especially when it comes to your room, this hodgepodge or lack of personality might be an issue. Your bedroom is your true safe space in your home. It is where you often spend most of your time. It is the only space that is truly yours and yours alone (unless you live along, but this is often rarer for undergraduate students). And even then, the living room and kitchens and other spaces are more public spaces, areas where other people might come in and invade even if you live alone. But your room is really and truly yours. A sanctuary, if you will.

So if you need to update your bedroom for cheap to help you make your personal space more you (or maybe you even just need a change), then read on for some tips that every college student can use to update their bedroom!

Rearranging the Room

The first (and cheapest) thing you can do, rather than buying new furniture, is to simply rearrange the room. See how your room looks and feels with your bed in the opposite corner of where it is. Maybe you have your bed against the wall. You could try arranging it so the bed can be accessed on three sides and juts out from the wall.

What if you move your dresser into your closet? What if you move your desk right under the window? What if you move your desk away from the window? There are a lot of options!

If you are not sure where to start, you can always start off by following the guidelines of the practice of Feng Shui. Most people have heard of Feng Shui, but they do not really understand what it is.

According to MyDomaine, these are the guidelines to help you practice Feng Shui on your own at home:

  1. “Slow Down the Energy Flow.
  2. Keep Your House Clear of Clutter.
  3. Keep the Path to the Front Door Clear.
  4. Give Guests a Reason to Pause.
  5. Balance the Five Elements.
  6. Remove Negative Symbolism.
  7. Maximize Natural Light.
  8. Rebalance Workstations in the Kitchen.”

See how you can incorporate these practices as you rearrange the furniture in your own home!

Rent Furniture

Another way to update your bedroom is to rent furniture! You might be asking how that is different than simply getting a furnished apartment. Well, when you rent your own furniture, you can actually choose the pieces of furniture that will be going into your home and room.

When you get a furnished apartment, you may get furniture but you certainly do not have a say in what they look like! So by renting, you still spend less money than you would by having a furnished apartment and you get to like the furniture you have in your space.

You also have the choice of how much furniture to rent. Maybe you are totally fine with the bedframe in your room that you got at a garage sale. But you absolutely abhor the hand me down dresser you got from your grandma. You hate the color, the style, it is not a good shape that fits your room. Whatever it may be—renting is still an option. There is nowhere where it says that you must rent an entire apartment’s worth of furniture. Just rent the furniture that you need! Just a dresser? Great! Rent the one that you like. Want to add a nightstand because it would make you feel more comfortable? Go for it! Make that space yours.
