Feng-Shui Your Apartment

By Lorena Roberts on April 29, 2017

According to Abodo.com, Feng-Shui is a belief that dictates certain designs in a home. For example, Feng-Shui provides suggestions for how furniture can be arranged to increase the chi in your home.

There are lots of ways to go about accomplishing this in your apartment, but here are some general rules.

Ensure cleanliness

Above all, this is the number one rule to having successful chi in your home.

Avoid overcrowding with furniture

“High traffic areas” should be clear — this will ensure easy movement about the apartment. One of the worst things you can do is purchase furniture that’s too big — or have too much of it.

Invest in some green plants and natural lighting

Feng-Shui strongly suggests that plants be a part of the decor. Though plants don’t need to be the focal point of a room, and you definitely don’t want to overwhelm your guests, it is necessary to include some greenery in your decor.

Additionally, natural lighting can really give the room a calming feel. Artificial lighting is not suggested.

Mirrors are essential

Especially for tiny apartments, mirrors can be the trick to making Feng-Shui really work in your place. Mirrors help visually expand your space — you won’t feel so crowded.

Bedroom Feng Shui is important

Position your bed so the soles of your feet face the doorway. It’s important that you are able to see out the door without having to contort your body. Also, decorating with fire, earth, metal, water, and wood can increase the energy flow in your bedroom. Clutter will kill the energy of the room — so be careful where you file and stack your things.

*Pro-tip: Open your windows frequently to allow fresh energy into your home. Don’t stay shut up in your bedroom throughout the seasons.

Declutter your closets

Throwing everything into a closet and shutting the door represents unconscious blocks in your life. It’s important to have clean closets — you’ll feel more at peace with yourself.

Clean under the beds

Similarly to decluttering closets, cleaning under the bed will welcome energy into even the smallest spaces in your home. Donate your items, or find other places for them. Under the bed is not good Feng Shui practice.

Get rid of any items that represent negativity in your life. Feng Shui is all about positive energy.
