May 4th Memorial

The nation echoed with sadness as people began to hear about the shooting at Kent State University on May 4, 1970. During a protest against the Vietnam War, nine students were wounded and four students were killed when the National Guard began to open fire into the crowd of protestors. Since then, the university has had many events in the efforts to remember the sad day that occurred on its campus.

A memorial was also built to memorialize the students who lost their lives. The Kent State University library also has many digital archives and collections that talk about the May 4th shooting. As a graduating person at Kent State University, it may be very important to you to know the history of your school or know exactly what happened that day. These many memorials and collections could help you achieve just that.

Go and visit the memorial yourself and observe it and what it says. The university was never the same again after that day. Students, faculty, and staff take a moment of silence and a chance to reflect the shooting each year.

Rec Center

Kent State University has a beautiful recreation center for its students and faculty to enjoy. If you have not been, this may be a place to add to your “graduating bucket list.”

The recreation center has state of the art workout equipment, sporting courts, snack bars, and flat-screen televisions to watch as you exercise. Not only is the center a gym for exercise, but also many intermural sporting games and events are held here.

Well-known events like “zombie outbreak” and “kentchella” all have their homes in the Kent State rec center. The rec center also offers many outdoor recreational activities like camping trips, kayaking, and canoeing. One of these awesome trips may be the last bang you need as a graduating student from Kent State.

Kent Stage

Kent Stage is also one the gems of the city where graduating students may want to go before they graduate. The Kent Stage has been in business for decades as a venue for film, shows, and live music. Tickets are sold at a discounted price which is very appealing to a lot of college students.

The Kent Stage showcases various artists, bands, and comedians all from different genres. If you want to experience a performance from a band you’re not particularly used to, a trip to the Kent Stage is for you. Shows are pretty much every weekend and you can visit their website for more information about upcoming shows and tickets.

Flashfest

Flashfest is one of the biggest events of the year at Kent State University. Flashfest is a large festival for students where the university brings in a huge musical artist to put on a concert for the students. There are two separate concerts for students to enjoy. In the past years, the concert held in the MACC center used to be free for Kent State University students, but now the price is $10 or $20 depending on which level of the MACC center you would like to sit in for the concert.

Nevertheless, these ticket prices are highly discounted compared to concert tickets you may purchase for other concerts. Flashfest includes various games and activities as well as another free concert outside on “the green.” Students can get free food, win prizes, and just lay outside enjoying the nice weather. Flashfest is usually held in the month of April on campus.

Food Truck

The Kent State food truck is a fairly new attraction on campus with very high reviews. If you haven’t eaten from the food truck, you are certainly missing out. If you want some delicious food before graduating, the food truck is a good way to go. The convenience of the food truck is the fact that it is on wheels. The location of the truck changes throughout the day and there is an app students can download on their phones to track the truck and find out where it is and where it will be. The truck has everything from salads to loaded french fries. Everything is cooked fresh right in front of you.

Downtown Kent

Lastly, downtown Kent is one attraction that many college students love. Downtown Kent has so many shops and restaurants with different cuisine you should definitely try. Downtown Kent has festivals throughout the year and it is just a nice place to take a stroll on the warm summer nights. If you have not experienced the livelihood of downtown Kent yet, you should definitely be a part of it before you graduate.
