Best Shows on Netflix to Escape the Summer Heat

By Max Berman on July 16, 2016

As the summer drags on, it’s hard to resist the urge to just lay in bed all day and indulge in Netflix. Sure, the sun may be shining and the birds may be chirping, but what’s actually better than total relaxation as the shows stream by? Not much, especially in the sweltering Florida heat. If you’re looking for some shows to help stave off the boredom, here’s some that will be sure to keep you interested.

 Orange is The New Black

To think that this Netflix original is in it’s fourth season is insane, as it seems like only yesterday the hit TV show began making waves. Being one of the boldest shows to address issues such as systematic racism and police brutality, it’s also brilliantly written and contains some of the best acting found in the twenty first century. Based on a real woman’s story, Piper spends her time in federal prison for a crime she had committed ten years prior, only to find out about actual life behind bars and surviving the prison hierarchy and ascending in the ranks. Besides this, we see struggles with addiction, as well as facing guards who are increasingly becoming more militant and forceful with the inmates. If you’re looking for something gritty, but compelling at the same time then this is definitely the show for you.

Bob’s Burgers

Totally switching gears to an animated series, but great for anyone looking to kill some time during the day. A simple family running a burger joint in a seaside town always seem to be getting into some sort of trouble, and never managing to properly run the restaurant. While the premise may sound juvenile, it’s packed with innuendos and hilarious references, so it really is the perfect show for everyone. While I can’t say that I’ve become a whole lot smarter for watching the show, it has given me some good laughs when I thought I was going to go insane not having anything to do once class has let out.

Trailer Park Boys

One of the more obscure shows on Netflix has actually turned out to be my favorite, and I’ve watched it all the way through over three times now. This mockumentary series chronicles the life of three friends in Sunnyvale Trailer Park in Canada. In the show,  Bubbles, Ricky, and Julian all work together to try to support themselves as well as live with the insufferable foreman of their community. Lacking formal education and being a bit wild, these three men resort to various illegal activities to earn money. Always thinking about retiring early, Ricky is the ultimate catalyst for their schemes and for ten seasons we get to witness debauchery and failed robberies, busts, and neighborhood quarrels. While not the most traditional television show you’ll find, it’s one of the most brutally honest and hilarious shows that is available for streaming.

The Office

Okay, so this may not be a recent show but it should not be overlooked or excluded from the list. This show is honestly one of the most entertaining and engaging shows to view, and you’ll quickly find yourself becoming fully immersed in the plot as well as falling in love with all of the characters. Based in Scranton, Pennsylvania, salesman and warehouse workers at a mid range paper  company have been chosen to be documented by a film crew from PBS. As the series goes on, you find out about the secret office romances lurking beneath the surface, and fall in love with the manager Michael Scott, as he only wants to do what’s best for his employees and the company. Rainn Wilson and Steve Carrell give the best performances of their acting careers as Dwight Schrute and Michael Scott, and create a profound dynamic that’s rare to find in television.

Sons of Anarchy

If you’re looking for a darker, more dangerous show then this is definitely the fit for you. Based around a motorcycle gang in California, the “Sons of Anarchy” are always involved in some sort of shady deal about to go bad. From bank robberies to gun theft, this show will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. Love him or hate him, the protagonist Jax is a complex character that is full of surprises and revelations throughout the show. As the seasons go on, we’re able to grow and morph with the characters, forming bonds to the rougher characters and mourning their losses throughout the show.
