Why I Could Care Less About Award Shows

By Kylie Exline on February 29, 2016

It seems that nowadays the only topics of conversation people are interested in making have to deal with the lovely array of political candidates for this upcoming election, the racism behind well, almost everything, and why people need to focus on the newest additions to Snapchat.

I know, we definitely have our pop culture priorities straight.

However, I could not help but notice the excess attention surrounding the award shows for this year. Below are reasons why I could care less about who brings home a trophy at the end of the night.

1. I haven’t seen/heard half of the movies and songs.

When you watch these shows, or if you are anything like me and only view the highlights that everyone is talking about the next day, then you are looking for movies and songs that you have heard or seen before.

For instance, upon Rihanna and Drake’s new single “Work,” I have come to know that people are either A: obsessed in a good way, or B: obsessed in a “I-can’t-believe-they-did-this” way. Personally, the song is a C- and could use some help in the rhyming department.

With this said, I would not know of any awards given to the song because it came out now, not five months ago. And I am the kind of person who expects instant gratification so waiting a year just won’t do it.

But then there are all of these other songs and artists that I have never even heard of. Plus, if you are already lost within the first five minutes, then you are not going to want to continue watching or listening, right? Movies are even worse. You may potentially recognize the actor, but then know absolutely nothing else on the premise of the film. If striving to be lost is your thing, then you certainly found your answer.

2. I don’t know half of the people.

Being in college, we are used to seeing various people that we have and most likely will never see again. This is a different story when talking about the awards shows, however. No one wants to watch something when they cannot even recognize one person, trust me. There are always going to be the J Law’s of the crowd, but that only goes so far.

Why watch an awards show when you literally have no idea who or what it is they are discussing? It can be fun to guess who is who along the way, but that becomes a bit tedious after the first four categories are called.

To enhance entertainment, I would recommend taking a shot every time the host makes a stupid joke, or downing popcorn each time it shows the scene of Leonardo DiCaprio fighting a ginormous bear in The Revenant. YOLO.

3. I’m tired halfway through.

We may not be 68, but we are also no longer 12-year-olds that can power through boring shows just for the heck of it, and because we believe we are the definition of cool by staying up past 10 on a Monday night. Yeah, be jealous of your preteen self.

While watching these award shows, everything becomes pretty redundant pretty fast. For instance, the females are mainly in dresses and the guys in various shades of black and grey tuxes, as well as random questions on who the B plus celebrities believe are going to win this year. Pretty life changing stuff.

With all of the questions asked, speeches made, and jokes attempted throughout the entire night, it becomes difficult to recognize what is important and what can make an actual difference. It also does not help that there are commercials every 4.9 minutes and that their cameramen cannot seem to keep up with the direction of the show. Who has time for a wardrobe change, mic mix up, and name mispronunciation anyway?

Although many may view award shows as interesting, the best time of the year, and even life changing, not all of it is the glitz and the glam it is made out to be. If anything, it is stressful to watch, hear, and understand; at least in my opinion that is. Hoping someone does not fall while walking on the stage is a huge start of a panic attack, especially with oh so many sets of eyes on you.

It does not mean that by me not watching these special affairs, I hate every actor and musician out there, but rather that if I can view a film on my timetable, then I am most likely going to like it more in the moment of watching it. Not simply because it won the Oscar, or was the hottest album of the year, but that I was able to be involved with something to my own degree.

Politics and social media can be fun and all, but do we really want to give up our Sunday night for a night filled with celebrities talking about who they are wearing? Also, a negative.

If award shows are your thing, however, feel free to visit this site for a complete list of when specific award shows are airing.
