B.A.M Girls Making a Huge BAM!

By Carelyn Tiburcio on January 30, 2016

As a child I loved to read. Books just helped expand my imagination and they still do to this day. I also enjoyed writing and coming up with stories. I always told myself that I’d be a writer when I grow up.

Amina, Briana, and Marley are way ahead of the majority of us aspiring writers. These three girls came up with a blog designed for adolescent girls. This blog has fashion tips, news about animals, updates on pop culture, and more!

I’ve looked through the majority of articles and I am in love with them all. I especially love the one by Amina called “I love my hair.” Growing up, I hated my natural hair because it didn’t look like what the girls had on TV or in magazines. Of course, I eventually broke out of the “straight hair” stereotype and loved my hair. For a young girl to be spreading the message that she loves her hair is an inspiration for young girls growing up who are insecure about their hair.

The B.A.M girls are partnered with the GrassROOTS community which is an organization designed for public health and social action. GrassROOTS is geared towards helping women and girls. It funds and supports opportunities for women and girls to make a change in not only themselves, but for their community as well.

The girls spend a lot of their time volunteering and giving back to the community, as seen on their website. If you keep scrolling through their blog, you can see ways that you can give back to the community as well such as food drives.

Marley came up with a project called the #1000Blackgirlbooks. While in school, Marley noticed that none of the books assigned to her had characters that looked like her. In response, Marley launched the #1000Blackgirlsbook. Her plan is to collect 1000 books with black girls as the main characters. The BAM girls will make a trip to Jamaica on February and deliver the books to a library in St. Marks, Jamaica.

Seeing such young girls doing this makes me so happy. I am extremely inspired by three such young, talented girls. The fact that they’re so young and spreading such a strong message to young girls is truly amazing. I’m so happy to see girls notice issues in society and taking action to make this world better. I know that I felt out of place as a child. I always read about the typical blonde girl and could barely relate to any character. I’m so glad that the BAM girls are spreading this message to girls out there to know that they’re special and beautiful.
