How to Start Off Fresh in Spring Semester

By Carelyn Tiburcio on January 8, 2016

Welcome back to another semester of college! For those of you who just started, welcome to sleepless nights and endless homework! But don’t worry, college isn’t all about stressing out. There are organizations to join, parties to attend, and great people to meet and get to know. Last semester was my first semester of college and I quite enjoyed it. However, there are some things that I regret doing and not doing. Here are some tips for those of you who are starting college this semester or for those of you who want to change things up a little.

1.    School comes first

Remember why you’re here. Recall those nights studying for the SAT. What was the purpose of taking the time to study for that tedious exam? To get into the college of your choice!  Remember why your parents dropped you off at an unknown university?  They wanted you to further your education in order to have a better future than they did. They did not leave you in a university that’s hours away just so you can hang out with friends and party. I actually know some people who have gotten kicked out of college because they couldn’t balance schoolwork and fun. School comes first all the time! It’s ok to have fun but always remember to study first.

2. Stay Healthy

Remember to always eat something. Don’t starve yourself. Let’s admit it, we all have those days where we just want to order cheap food because we’re too lazy to get out of bed. Remember that 99% of the time cheap fast food isn’t a good idea. Trust me, I ate fast food every other day throughout my first month of college. During my first football game, I fainted for the first time in my life and missed more than half of the game. I wasn’t eating properly and my body had a horrible reaction. Remember to buy healthy foods, such as fruits and vegetables. Also, remember to always stay hydrated by drinking water.

Exercise is also essential. College is very stressful. Going for a 30 minute jog can help relieve stress and keep you healthy. Take some time out for yourself to regain energy and relax.

You’re an adult now. You’re responsible for what goes into your body and how you treat your body so make sure you’re making healthy decisions.

3.    Be involved

There’s so much to do on campus. If you’re a freshman, now is the time to get involved in numerous organizations. Explore the different possibilities around you. Keep yourself occupied, yet remember to always put school work first.

Try something that you’ve never done. I joined a dance organization just for the fun of it. I’ve never tried dancing and now that I did, I ended up falling in love with it. Be open to new things because you never know if you end up developing a new passion. You’d be surprised at what you could do.

4.    Surround yourself with people with the same vision as you

It’s simple. If you want to be an actor, surround yourself with people who do theatre. If you want to an astronaut, hang out with people who enjoy astronomy.  If you want to be positive, surround yourself with the happiest people. Surrounding yourself with people that have the same mindset as you can get you closer to your goals.

5.    Be nice

Remember where you are. You’re in a new place surrounded by new people. Attitude is everything. Being nice in a new place can get you opportunities that you wouldn’t have imagined. Be nice to people because you never know when you might meet up with them in the future.
