The application deadline is quickly approaching for the LMJ scholarship program, a $10,000 scholarship that will be awarded to fifteen students entering their first year of law school during the 2014-2015 academic year. Interested students should submit their application on www.mcca.com by May 29, 2014.

The scholarship was “established to nurture the academic and professional careers of outstanding law students and advance the diversity pipeline to the legal profession.”

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be interested in corporate law and diversity, have an undergraduate GPA of 3.2 and be accepted into an ABA-accredited U.S. law school for a full-time Juris Doctorate Program on or before the application deadline on or before the application deadline. The selection criteria include academics, community involvement, financial need and responses to essay questions.

Recipients who maintain good academic standing may have the opportunity for additional scholarships for their remaining years of law school.

The scholarship is sponsored by the Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA), an organization founded in 1997 with the goal of increasing minority representation in the legal profession. Additional funding comes from national law firms and corporations, including Microsoft and Nationwide, who also support recipients through mentoring, clerkships and career training.

“The legal pipeline for minority students has become increasingly constricted. MCAA’s scholarship program is the centerpiece of our effort to address this issue,” said Joseph K. West, MCAA’s President and CEO.

MCAA also partnered with International Scholarship and Tuition Services, Inc. (ISTS), who will manage application setup and design, as well as processing of applications and disbursement of awards.

The scholarship has been available for ten years, and in that time, it has helped more than 130 students with total awards amounting to over $2.4 million.
