This was one day a week lecture from power point slides, the other, lab assignments on the computer. Basically Window XP through and through, and two very hard tests from which he curves well. He is a super good guy, and you will score points by showing up both nights, and turning in your assignments. You will have to turn in your assignments, to avoid problems. Get a flash memory stick, and try to do work at home, because, the assignments are lengthy. Very good teacher...

I enjoyed his class very much and learned a lot. His exercises were helpful. His test covered the exercises and the book.

he is one of the worst professors at CSUEB, I don't think he really knows cryptography stuff and programming,he is extremely lazy, all homeworks, exams and project are exactly from previous quaters. and he doesn't want to spend time to grade Hws/projects, all he wants to do is picking up his paycheck.he is a terrible guy!

One of the easiest professors at the M.S. level. He is lazy and his english is bad, and that combination makes him one of the easiest professors around. All you need to get an A in his class are the solutions to the homework assignments, the midterm and the final from the previous quarters. Finding the solutions is not that hard. Just ask someone who already took the class with him. He doesn't change the problems at all (not even the numbers in the math problems). Also, for the project, he asks for the source code and a readme file, but he doesn't check those. Even if you hardcode the results, as long as you have a nice GUI (use Visual Basic), he will give you a 100. As long as he can double-click the .exe file and as long as it looks nice, he doesn't really care if it works. Even if you can't find the solutions and you do poorly on all the assignments, he will still give you a B. But beware!! If you plan to do the work yourself and actually learn the material, take it from someone else. For one thing, since he curves the grade, you will constantly lose out to people who have the solutions. Also, since his english is bad, if your answer is different from the solution by even a little bit (a few explanation/essay problems), you will lose all points on the problem. Since he doesn't actually spend time grading the papers/project, he doesn't bother to give partial credit. Its all or nothing. As I said, he hardly takes time to grade things, so you either get an A or a B. If you work hard, and deserve an A- or B+, you will be frustated if you take him since he will still give you a B. On the other hand, if you plan on breezing through the class, he is the best professor to take it with, since you might get an A, but the worst you will do is a B.

He is very lazy, all he did is just read the slides that came with the book, his homeworks/exams were taugh, plus he didn't described the project clearly, but expected you did very well. the grading is not fair. anyway, I wouldn't take this guy again!

Little Ertaul has absolutely no teaching skills, all he does is read from the slides that came with the book. If I needed someone to read what’s in the book back to me, I would have hired a secretary, or get a parrot. The man is also extremely lazy, all he wants to do is the bare minimum, pick up his paycheck and then go home. More than once, I tried to ask him a quick question during breaks, he literally ran away from me because he didn’t want to do any extra work (Someone like Matt Johnson would have stayed and answer my question). Someone below has already mentioned that Ertaul doesn’t like to answer questions, even during office hour, and I agree completely. More than once I went there because I have a question about the homework and he told me to just “Go read the book.” I later found out that most people don’t go to office hours because they all have his solutions to the homework, midterm, and finals. And I am sure Ertaul knows it, but he’s too lazy to change the questions. Since he grades on a curve, a lot of the cheaters do better than people who actually study honestly. There is just something arrogant and angry about the man. One time, someone sitting behind me had a question and she asked someone next to her about it, Ertaul literally threw a fit and asked them to drop the class. I mean had Ertaul been a better teacher and been more approacheable, people wouldn’t have to ask each other questions during class. Ertaul just seems to have an antagonistic attitude toward students. When I was working on my project, I went to see him. Immediately, he trashed my project and told me that my project was lousy because “I didn’t want to put in any work.” I mean the man didn’t know anything about me as a student or how much work I put into the project, but he just assumed that I was lazy and incompetent. Sometimes, I wish CSUEB would do a better job hiring professors who know how to teach and actually want to teach, as opposed to getting a lot of arrogant PHD’s who didn’t really want to be here (there are exceptions of course). If you sign up for Ertaul’s class, as some of you have no choice but to do since he is one of the only people who teach cryptography, you will get what you signed up for, the bare minimum.

It is a horrible course. We are designing an enterprise information system at purely abstract level. It is an easy class with no homework, no project, no exam. We only talk in class or trash talk. I doubt if we are learning anything from the class. CS6520 is a decent class to take from Dr. Ertaul. He teaches CS6525 almost the same as CS6520.

From my point of view, he doesn't want to help students. When I asked him a question in office hours, he sometimes said "I will explain the problem in class." But, he doesn't explain anything in class. What he is talking in class is "repetition" of the textbook rather than "lecture". The textbook he uses is sucks: it's difficult to understand & read. Some of HW problems cannno be solved. He assignes a software project(simulation of communication of packets). I will never take his class anymore.

Dr. Ertaul is the best professor in the CS Department. He is the most knowledgeable faculty in the Computer Science department. Having worked in the industry, he earned a great experience in technology. His information is recent and up to date. He is very enthusiastic and very helpful. He is willing to help you with any problem you have. Do yourself a favor and take his class.

The material in 3590 is really tough unless you already have extensive knowledge of networking. He puts a lot of effort to make sure students understand the material, but many still have trouble in the class. One big factor was the text he uses. Imagine a math book with no examples...and at the end of each chapter, there are dozens of questions that are nearly impossible to figure out. During the midterm, though, he looked at everyone`s exams, spotted trouble areas, and gave formulas, hints, etc. to help. us solve the problems. Summary: very nice guy, decent professor, bad text.

One of the worst professors I have ever taken a class from. Lectures using endless powerpoint slides with material lifted directly from the book. He has no sense of peoples` ability to absorb information and blathers on long after the class has tuned out to his stream of acronyms and minutia. Homework problems are mostly a waste of time. Test questions focus on petty and random scraps of information from the vast amount of material covered. Avoid this farce of an instructor at all costs.
