The 5 R's: How to Reduce Stress

By Khadija Dukes on August 18, 2014

Going off to college, moving into your first apartment or starting your first job are experiences many young adults are familiar with. However, with those feelings of excitement and anticipation also comes a feeling of stress. With these five tips, you will be able to manage your stress so that you can enjoy every new experience.

Release

Vent, and I do not mean angry tweet all of your followers on Twitter or write revealing posts on Facebook. Doing so will not earn you more followers or get you more likes on Facebook. It can actually have the opposite effect because no one on social media really wants to hear you vent. A much healthier option is to talk to a close friend or family member in person or over the phone because they will be able to comfort you and listen, while also giving advice on how to handle your stressful situation.

Relax

There is no point in stressing over something that you cannot change, so instead try meditating, taking a hot bath or listening to your favorite song. Relax in a quiet space and allow your worries to melt away for a moment, and if you are not very fond of taking baths or do not believe in meditation, try reading a book. The point is to do something that you enjoy that will help put you in a relaxed state of mind.

Recharge

Another way to relieve stress is to exercise. Getting your blood pumping will direct your focus to the task at hand, whether that be running, walking or bicycling, so that you will not think of how stressed you are. Exercising also releases endorphins which make you happier and will help to uplift your mood. Not to mention admitting how stressed out you are will also give you an excuse to finally go to the gym.

Refuel

After all of that exercising you will naturally be hungry, so refuel your body by eating a healthy meal to re-energize you. The extra energy you get from the food will not only leave your stomach feeling satisfied, but you will also have more energy to tackle any tough tasks or the problem that caused your stress in the first place.

Rejoice

Rejoice and be thankful for all of the good things in your life. Show your appreciation for others and acknowledge important people in your life. Doing so will not only make that person feel good, but you will also begin to forget all the things that are going wrong in your life and focus on the things that are going right. Watching a sad or depressing movie will also make you feel more appreciative about what you have and will make your problems seem much smaller.

If you ever find yourself getting stressed out, just remember the Five R’s and you will relieve your stress in no time.
