Top 10 Animated Films For All Ages

By Julia Bianco on July 31, 2014

Animated movies are great for people both young and old, but they’re not all made equal. While some of your favorite kid’s movies will still make you laugh and cry when you watch them today, others just don’t hold up to the tough test of time.

Here are the top ten animated films that you are sure to enjoy, no matter how old you are.

10. “Turbo”

This cute animated snail film went fairly unnoticed when it premiered last summer, but that doesn’t mean it’s one to skip over. With likable (and adorable) characters and some legitimately great humor, this movie is sure to keep you laughing throughout, and will make you feel just like you’re a kid again.

9. “Beauty and the Beast”

As you get older, watching some of the classic Disney princess movies can turn into quite the chore. Seeing ditzy girls fall in love with handsome princes gets less and less interesting as you age, especially as you start to realize how passive some of the heroines really are.

However, “Beauty and the Beast” had more substance than most of the other classic Disney films, with a likable and smart heroine and a story that really teaches you about being true to yourself. Plus, the songs are really catchy, and who doesn’t love Mrs. Potts and her adorable son, Chip?

8. “Brave”

“Brave” was an original and inspiring film, complete with a funny and smart heroine and her adorable younger brothers (when they turn into bears, my heart practically melted). The humor and inspirational message make this film worth it, and the beautiful animation is also wonderful to watch.

Fun fact— Merida’s curly, red hair, which featured over 1,500 individually drawn and placed strands, required a completely new hair simulator that went above and beyond anything that Pixar had ever done before.

7. The “Shrek” Series

Although this franchise got a bit off track in the later years, the first few films were solid examples of good cinema. Full of humor, charm, and wit that you don’t often see in cartoons, these films definitely stand up to the test of time.

6. “Mulan”

There is no song from any movie, animated or live-action, that has ever been or will ever be better than “I’ll Make a Man Out of You.” There is no fighting that, it’s just a known fact of life.

The rest of the movie can’t quite hold up to the brilliance of that two-minute segment, but it does pretty well for itself, providing solid entertainment throughout.

5. The “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” Series

These punny movies— the second one is especially up on its pun game—are sure to keep fans of so-bad-it’s-good humor entertained for hours. The movies are full of smaller Easter egg jokes that you can spend re-watch after re-watch trying to find.

4. “The Incredibles”

Everyone’s favorite super family makes this movie go above and beyond just your average animated flick, making it not just entertaining but also heartwarming. Watching this group of oddballs work together is a great treat for audiences, both young and old alike. Plus, Frozone is awesome.

3. The “How to Train Your Dragon” Series

These movies are funny, inspiring, heartwarming, and beautifully animated all at the same time, making them the complete package for any moviegoer. With a dynamite voice cast including Jay Baruchel, America Ferrara, and Gerard Butler, these films are sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.

2. “Monsters Inc.” and “Monsters University”

“Monsters University” is perfect for any college student, as it somehow manages to encapsulate the experience of a college freshman while still being a movie about animated monsters competing in a scare competition.

However, you also can’t forget about the classic “Monsters Inc.” that started it all. With the adorable Boo, funny buddy comedy from Mike and Sulley, and an original storyline that brought together a number of different elements that viewers hadn’t really seen before, “Monsters Inc.” is a film that holds up for all ages.

1. The “Toy Story” Series

Many people were nervous when it was announced that a third “Toy Story” movie would be coming out so long after the original two premiered. However, very few were disappointed when it did.

The third film took the series and aged it up a bit, making a film that was appealing for both kids and adults. With some legitimately intense and scary moments, the third film was a film that brought something deeper to the series.

However, the first two hold up just as well, with hidden themes, emotional scenes, and a story that everyone can relate to.  All these reasons and more ensure that these classic films will still be favorites for plenty of years to come.
