Big news for students interested in filmmaking: nonprofit organization Students of the World will be hosting The Bloom Film Challenge, a documentary short contest that gives students the chance to have their work air on Pivot TV.

The challenge, which begins on April 25, asks students to produce a two-minute documentary short on a mystery prompt, which will be released at the start of the competition. Students will then have ten days to write, film and edit their video, with final submissions due on May 4.

In order to enter the contest, students must be currently enrolled in a U.S. university. Students can enter individually or as a team of up to three students.

The top five finalists for the competition will be announced on May 8. These finalists will have a chance to engage in one last round of editing before completing the project on May 12.

Two grand prize winning teams will win $1,000 in cash, and will have their video played on Pivot TV. Three finalists will also win $500 each. Additionally, there will be awards given out for best editing, best cinematography and best soundtrack.

Students of the World is a nonprofit that is dedicated to helping working with student filmmakers to produce films on social issues. The organization, which was founded by Courtney Spence in 2000 while she was an undergraduate at Duke University, has chapters at 15 different campuses across the country and has created projects on more than 50 causes in 27 different countries.

Pivot TV and Silk are also sponsoring the Bloom Film Challenge. Pivot TV is a new channel, run by Participant Media. The channel will launch on August 1, and it will be broadcast in 45 million homes across the country. The channel’s goal is to give Millenials (18-34 year-olds) a place to see the programming that they want to see, which will range from original series to acquired program to films to documentaries.

“The spirit of this competition is to help aspiring filmmakers bloom,” said Students of the World Founder Courtney Spence. “We’re excited to partner with Silk and Pivot TV to support students’ creativity and encourage them to follow their passions.”

“Pivot strives to provide a platform that reflects the diverse viewpoints, identities, and creative expressions of our audience,” said Kent Rees, EVP of Marketing, Scheduling, and Operations at Pivot. “The Bloom Film Challenge is a great opportunity to support Students of the World and showcase the work of students and emerging filmmakers committed to positive social change.”

To take part in the contest, register on The Bloom Film Challenge’s website by April 20. All members of the team must register.
